A friend of mine has the previous generation.380 and had some feeding problems with it but polished the ramp and barrel and it's been fine since. We've taken it to the range and thrown 100+ rounds of JHP thru it and it's been fine. Hand hurts after a while but really, it's not a range gun. It's an easily concealable last-ditch, point-and-shoot gun. There are no sights to speak of though we did get some of that high-vis orange paint and put two dots on the pseudo-sights it comes with. Generation 2 guns have been alot better though I'm still hearing of some buff and fluff needed for great reliability.
The Kel-Tec P3AT is definately going to be my next gun and my 95% of the time carry weapon. Even if it does need a little extra attention to get to perfection. It's effortless to carry. 6 in the mag, 1 in the pipe. If you can't get the job done with 7 hollow points.you've got problems.
I know two people that carry the 380One of the two had a few problems, the other runs perfectly. The one with problems was fixed with about 10 minutes of shop time. (about 20 dollars at a local gunsmith)My schools baseball team has a practice field that is in the bad part of town, and one of the guys I know that own the 380 carries it while he practices, noone knows he has it! The school has a no gun on campus property rule, but we had a few problems in that field, and the unarmed 80 year old gaurds are a damn joke!He doesnt carry on the main university grounds. And he isnt the only one that carries while in that practice field.so I guess it's dont ask dont tell! I bought one off a guy over The High Road. He said he had already done the fluff and buff, and had no problems with it.
I've only been able to bring it shooting once, and put 75 rounds through it with no problem, other that an inability to hit what I was aiming at past 10 yards.I made the mistake of only bringing nice ammo, and found the gun fairly snappy with Federal Hydrashoks and downright unpleasent with Cor-Bon's.380 load. Next time I go, I'm bringing some more mild-mannered FMJ loads, to get a better feel for the gun.No feeding problems though, which is a good thing.greg. I have become a big fan of Kel-Tec after buying the first generation (FG) P3AT. They are great little pistols, but you have to understand their purpose before you buy one.First off, they weigh less than 8oz unloaded. In order to achieve their small size and weight, some of the features/properties that many on this forum appreciate in their Glocks, Springfields, and HKs had to be reduced or eliminated. For example, if you want a reliable pistol, I suggest you clean and lube every 25 rounds during reliability testing, and every 50 rounds after you are convinced it is reliable enough for carry. It will not do well if fired bone dry, thrown in a snowbank overnight, or filled with sand like a Glock in a torture test.
It was meant for the safe, clean world of shorts or slacks. Give it that, and it will happily disappear in a front or back pocket but be ready if you need it.Because it is so light weight, it is very easy to induce failures due to limp-wristing. Sometimes, even very experienced shooters have this problem, because they have learned to relax while shooting 1911s or some other large, comfortable combat pistol.
Because of their 'experience' they refuse to even entertain the possibility that they could be the cause of the problem, and instantly label the pistol a POS. At 8oz, this little locked-breech pistol needs something to push against, and that something is your hand/arm. With a little practice, it isn't a problem, but it sometimes requires patience. The trigger is DAO, but fairly light (listed as 5 lbs.) You must fully release the trigger for it to reset. Glock shooters who like to 'stage' the trigger sometimes get light strikes because they don't let the trigger reset all the way.The P3AT isn't particularly pleasant to shoot in large doses. It tends to pound on the web of the hand between the thumb and index finger. If you want to shoot it a lot, get some pistol gloves - your hands will thank you.The serial number info given above is not entirely correct. Here is a link to a detailed description of the differences between the two pistols taken directly from an email the Kel-Tec factory sent the poster, along with some nice photos of both generations side-by-side:For any who do decide to buy a P3AT, I strongly recommend going to one of the Kel-Tec enthusiast websites and reading up a little: it will make your ownership experience that much more rewarding.

Thanks for visiting and we hope you become a regular! I just read this and figured someone should be warning people.' During last summer I bought a Kel-Tec P3AT and some personal defense 'defender' ammo produced by MagSafe. I often practiced with my Kel-Tec at the range using standard Federal American Eagle, but due to the extreme cost, never fired the MagSafe ammo. I carried concealed with MagSafe in the magazine and chamber for 9 months due to their claims for stopping power and safety.Three weeks ago I was at the range and decided to try the MagSafe. On the first shot, the back of the cartridge peeled apart like a grape. The magazine blew out the bottom of the pistol, the slide bent and blew off the top, the frame split on the left side and every rivet blew out.
My hand was blackened like in a bad Roadrunner/Wiley Coyote movie, but not injured. The gun collapsed into a pile of debris. My gunsmith called MagSafe and was told OH YEAH.
WE'VE BLOWN UP TWO OF THOSE PISTOLS WITH OUR AMMO. WE NOW HAVE A STICKER ON THE PACKAGE THAT SAYS DO NOT USE WITH KEL-TEC P3AT. They said their ammo is extremely hot and exceeds SAMI specs (though it's not marked +P or +P+). Then they seemed to get personal about my level of intelligence and ability to read. Note, there was no warning sticker about the P3AT on the package I bought last year.Kel-Tec was concerned immediately, and indicated that the gun is designed to break down under a KB such as this to protect the shooter by dissipating the force of the explosion. They wanted to examine the parts to learn from this accident. They offered complete replacement of the gun, even though it was clearly the over-juiced ammo at fault.Thursday the brand new replacement arrived with the same serial number as the destroyed gun, so I don't have a lot of registraion gymnastics to do here in the Peoples' Republik of New York.Thank you Kel-Tec, for your concern and for the outstanding positive customer relations you demonstrated.MagSafe will never ride in my guns again, as my opinion is that it is unsafe.'

-Thomas JeffersonΜολών λαβέ!-King Leonidas. You're awful. Glock22xd9 was nice enough to warn us all about the danger, and he gets called a dumb-ass and a chimp for his troubles. Men can be very hard on other men. I see this all the time. I've vented.Men surely have their faults, but I'd surmise that you're having some issues with punctuality. You're three years late.
But, I guess it's never bad to call attention to a potential warning.ETA: EmptyMag wasn't being harsh when he said 'Give the chimp a cigar.' ; he was surely joking. That makes sense, because he was talking about the ridiculousness of trusting untested PD ammo.
